A Signal-Processing Framework for Reflection—Part 2: Analytic Formulae for Common Lighting and BRDF Models
نویسنده
چکیده
The first part of this paper presented a signal-processing framework for analyzing the reflected light field from a homogeneous convex curved surface under distant illumination. The notion of reflection as convolution was formalized, with a quantitative analysis of the reflected light field as obtained by a spherical convolution of the incident illumination and the BRDF. In this part of the paper, we derive analytic formulae for spherical harmonic coefficients of many common lighting and BRDF models. In this way, we explore the implications of the theoretical analysis for many special cases of interest, determining the well-posedness and conditioning of many forward and inverse rendering problems, and explaining previous empirical results.

A Signal-Processing Framework for Reflection—Part 1: Reflection as Convolution
We present a signal-processing framework for analyzing the reflected light field from a homogeneous convex curved surface under distant illumination. This analysis is of theoretical interest in both graphics and vision and is also of practical importance in many computer graphics problems—for instance, in determining lighting distributions and bidirectional reflectance distribution functions (B...
متن کاملA Signal-processing Framework for Forward and Inverse Rendering a Dissertation Submitted to the Department of Computer Science and the Committee on Graduate Studies of Stanford University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy
The study of the computational aspects of reflection, and especially the interaction between reflection and illumination, is of fundamental importance in both computer graphics and vision. In computer graphics, the interaction between the incident illumination and the reflective properties of a surface is a basic building block in most rendering algorithms, i.e. methods that create synthetic co...
متن کاملA Theory of Spherical Harmonic Identities for BRDF/Lighting Transfer and Image Consistency
We develop new mathematical results based on the spherical harmonic convolution framework for reflection from a curved surface. We derive novel identities, which are the angular frequency domain analogs to common spatial domain invariants such as reflectance ratios. They apply in a number of canonical cases, including single and multiple images of objects under the same and different lighting c...

is bounded by 1. Over the last five decades numerous BRDF models were introduced. Beckmann [BS63] and Torrance and Sparrow [TS67] presented physically based microfacet BRDF models that use the Gaussian distribution to define the microfacets’ surface normals. The model by Torrance and Sparrow was used in computer graphics by Cook and Torrance [CT81] and later improved by He et al. [HTSG91]. Howe...
متن کاملAnalytic Framework for Calculating Brdfs of Randomly Rough Surfaces
This report presents an analytic framework for calculating BRDFs (bi-directional reflectance distribution function) of randomly rough surfaces. The fundamental assumptions are the tangent plane approximation and statistical approach sufficiency. By treating a local surface area as its tangent plane, the tangent plane approximation validates the description of waves using geometric rays, and the...
